Asus ROG 3 launched, the specs monster comes with 865 Plus 144 Hz display, 5G, Google Stadia Pro and much more
Asus has launched 3rd generation of its gaming smartphone, the ROG 3 during the ‘Game Changer‘ event. Asus ROG smartphones are known for being heavy specs loaded and aims for gaming. Asus ROG 3 is no different, with Snapdragon 865 Plus with 5G Support, 144 Hz Display and massive 6000 mAh battery. With Asus ROG 3 comes various accessories to enhance the gaming experience similar to its predecessor.
Design & Display
Asus ROG 3 has a 6.59 inch AMOLED Full HD display with 144 Hz refresh rate and 1 ms response time. Asus says the 144 Hz Refresh Rate will provide ‘most fluid and blur-free gaming experience‘. Asus has provided an option to change the refresh rate manually and set it to 144Hz, 120Hz, 90Hz, or 60Hz and you can keep it in Auto Mode to provide a balance between battery life and performance. ROG 3 also has a low touch latency of 25ms and slide latency of 18ms and touch sampling rate of 270 Hz.
Display of ROG3 is also HDR10+ support and a peak brightness of 1000 nits. Even though the display is just Full HD+ and not Quad HD, it will be decent enough for gaming and will in fact help in battery life. Asus has kept the dual front facing stereo speakers on the front of the device.
Asus ROG 3 is still has the bold design like its predecessor and has round edges and the RGB ROG logo at the back. The back of the phone is made of glass and Gorilla Glass 3 protection meanwhile the 6.59 inch display with protected with Gorilla Glass 6 protection. It has a transparent window at the back which reveals which shows off the heat sink. Also the back is the Rear camera setup.
One the left of the phone, is additional USB Type-C port for charging while you are playing your games on the phone, there is a standard USB Type-C port at the bottom of the phone as well. On the right side of the phone is the Power button and volume rocker and the phone’s key feature the AirTriggers. Asus has upgraded the AirTriggers by providing multiple contact points, swiping gestures and motion control. AirTriggers can customised to provide the R1/R2 and L1/L2 experience which is very nifty feature.
Performance & Battery
Asus ROG 3 has the latest flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 Plus chipset with Adreno 650 GPU. It has a 16 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to 512 GB UFS 3.1 storage. Snapdragon 865 Plus is clocked at 3.1 GHz and brings the 5G support to ROG 3. Asus says it uses their new GameCool 3 cooling system which uses the heat sink which 6 times larger than the one in ROG 2 and helps reducing the heat generated when playing games with 144 Hz refresh rate. Asus recommends to use the AeroActive Cooler 3 which comes with the phone to reduce the temperature by 4 degrees while if you plan to play games with 144 Hz refresh rate.
Asus ROG 3 comes with the humongous 6000 mAh battery which should provide a good battery life like the ROG 2. To charge this huge battery Asus is using the Quick Charge 4.0 and use a 30W charger to provide fast charging. ASUS says it takes 45 minutes to charge 4510 mAh of battery capacity which is almost 70%. It is still not the quickest charging speeds but then with the additional charging port you can always charge while playing as well.
ROG 3 misses out on the 3.5 mm headphone jack which was present in ROG 2 which is let down for some serious gamers. But there is a workaround, where you can connect the AeroActive Cooler 3 which has a Type-C port and 3.5 mm headphone jack, not ab ideal scenario but better than not to have it.
ASUS ROG 3 comes with Android 10 out of the box with ROG UI which very lightweight UI without much of the bloatware many OEMs still add on the UI.
Asus have gone for triple camera setup at the Rear. The standard wide lens with 64 MP and Sony IMX686 sensor with aperture of f/1.8, 13 MP ultra-wide lens with field of view of 125° and a 5 MP Macro Lens for the close-up shots. On the front, there a 24 MP selfie camera. ASUS has improved the video capabilities for the 3rd generation of ROG series.
