Design & Display
Pixel 5 has a 6 inch OLED Full HD+ HDR10+ display with 90Hz refresh rate, while the Pixel 4a 5G with 6.2 inch Full HD+ display is slightly bigger than Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a has smallest display of the three with 5.82 inch Full HD+ display. Pixel 4a and 4a 5G has standard 60 Hz refresh rate. There is not doubt Pixel 5 has far better display compared to the other two phones. The 90Hz refresh rate will be handy in games and would be smoother in daily use as well.
Google went way with the not so popular notch design on the Pixel 4 and all the phones Pixel 4a, Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 has the punch hole cut-out on the left top of the screen, which much than the earlier Pixel 4. Google Pixel 5, the flagship (yet not so flagship) has aluminium body while Pixel 4a and 4a 5G has the polycarbonate body. Pixel 5 offers the IP68 rating while the two phones miss out any IP certification.
All three phones have rear-mounted fingerprint scanner and stereo speakers. But Pixel 4 and 4a 5G has 3.5mm jack. Pixel 4a and 4a 5G come in only Just Black colour option while Pixel has a new and interesting ‘Sorta Sage’ greenish colour option along with Just Black. Pixel 5 feels more premium compared to other two devices but Pixel 4a 5G is larger phone compared to Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a mainly due to screen size.
Performance & Cameras
In terms of Performance, Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G which has 5G capabilities while Pixel 4a on Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 which doesn’t have 5G hence the Pixel 4a is 4G only. Pixel 4a and Pixel 4a 5G both have 6GB of RAM while Pixel 5 has 8GB RAM. All three models have 128 GB UFS 2.1 storage. Pixel 4a with 3140 mAh , has smallest battery capacity between the three, while Pixel 4a 5G has 3885 mAh and Pixel 5 4000 mAh. Google weirdly opted for bigger battery for Pixel 5 which has smaller screen than Pixel 4a 5G which is a bigger phone and bigger screen than Pixel 5.
Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G on daily use should perform the same but Pixel 5 would feel a bit smoother just because of the 90Hz refresh rate. So with respect to pricing, Pixel 4a 5G is better option here in terms of performance.
Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G both have exactly same cameras, with 12.2MP standard wide lens and 16MP ultra-wide lens and a 8MP front selfie camera. Pixel 4a has the same 12.2MP wide lens and 8MP front camera but misses out on the ultra-wide lens. Camera performance from all the phones should be great. Pixel 4a is a good option for basic photography but Pixel 4a 5G again is much better value with the ultra-wide lens.
Conclusion
So Pixel 5 vs Pixel 4a 5G vs Pixel 4a, which Google Pixel you should buy in 2020? Well this depends on what exactly you are looking for. None of these devices provide the top of the line specs like a OnePlus 8 series or Samsung Galaxy S20 series though Pixel 5 has some of them it is still not in comparison with these top spec’d phones. But being Google and Pixel devices they will offer great camera capabilities. Pixel 4a 5G provides good value for the price compared to Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a but it doesn’t the premium features like 90Hz display, IP certification or wireless and reverse wireless charging and some better video capabilities.
Who should buy Google Pixel 4a
Pixel 4a is for someone who is looking for compact smartphone mainly for a good camera for a cheaper price. Pixel 4a camera performance is great compared others in the same price category. Pixel 4a is not a phone for someone who is looking for fast performing smartphone.
Who should buy Google Pixel 4a 5G
Pixel 4a 5G is a phone for someone who looking for decently priced 5G phone with good camera. Pixel 4a 5G offer 5G and good camera and should perform daily use easily. But it does misses out on the some of the premium features Pixel 5.
Who should buy Google Pixel 5
Pixel 5 is a phone for someone who looking for great camera, 5G and premium features like 90Hz,IP rating, wireless charging etc. It is good phone with good price but lacks a top of line processor, though it should handle all the daily task and multi-tasking easily.
In the end, Pixel 4a 5G offers great value when compared to other two for the price and could be a choice for many compared to Pixel.
