Display 120Hz vs 90Hz

Both the phones have similar screen size 6.55 inch for OnePlus 8 vs 6.78 inch but the major difference is the screen refresh OnePlus 8 comes with the now standard 90Hz rate but the Pro model now has 120Hz refresh rate and resolution for the 8 is 2400×1080 Full HD display where the 8 Pro has 3168×1440 QHD display.

Design – Similar Design

Gone is the pop-up camera and tear drop notch if you compare the 8 series with the previous generation. OnePlus 8 series now has the punch hole camera on left top corner. Both the models have similar design with slight differences in screen size and taller body on the 8 Pro.

One of the major difference is the IP68 dust and water IP rating on the 8 Pro which the OnePlus 8 misses out on.

OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro both comes in Onyx Black and Glacial Green colours. The difference is the third colour, OnePlus 8 comes with flashy Interstellar Glow and 8 Pro has Ultramarine Blue colour.

Performance – Lead with Speed with Snapdragon 865

Both the phones has the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor with 8GB/12GB RAM so performance wise both should perform well. Though there is a difference of LDDR4x on 8 and LDDR5 on Pro model, which means 8 Pro will have a better memory speeds.

Storage options are also similar with 128GB/256GB UFS 3.0 storage. Both the phones supports 5G now and runs on Android 10.

Cameras – 16MP vs 48MP Ultrawide

OnePlus 8 at the rear has a triple camera setup with 48MP main lens, 16MP Ultrawide and 2MP macro lens whereas Quad camera setup 48MP main lens, 48MP ultrawide lens, 8MP telephoto lens with 3x hybrid zoom and 5MP color filter lens. Though the main lens is same, the Sony sensor is different on both models IMX586 on the 8 vs IMX689 on the 8 Pro

Both models have same 16MP front camera setup so it will have same image quality.

Battery & Charging OnePlus finally goes Wireless

OnePlus 8 has a battery capacity of 4300mAh vs 4510mAh on the 8 Pro, with both the models have Warp Charge 30W fast charging wired charging. But OnePlus has finally gone with wireless charging, the one feature many OnePlus fans wanted. OnePlus 8 Pro has the Warp Charge 30T fast wireless charging. OnePLus 8 Pro charges at 30W wireless which can charge the phone from 1% to 50% in 30 mins but this is only with OnePlus’ own wireless charger.

Final Thoughts – Go Pro?

Though there is price difference of around $200/£200, the gap between OnePlus 8 vs 8 Pro is too big to look past. OnePlus 8 Pro is the now in the premium flagship category and ticks all the boxes. OnePlus 8 is not a lot behind though, performance wise it will match most of the phones and is a lot cheaper as well. But if the budget permits, OnePlus 8 Pro is the one to go for and get the top notch features.
