If you’re on a 100–900 Mbps full-fibre line with a Wi-Fi 6 ISP hub — which covers most BT, Sky, Virgin Media and TalkTalk customers — Wi-Fi 6 already carries your full line speed over the air, and a WiFi 7 router changes almost nothing you would notice. EE Full Fibre customers usually already own a WiFi 7 hub (the Smart Hub 7 Plus, standard since around December 2025). You get a real benefit in three cases: a multi-gigabit line of 2 Gbps or faster, WiFi 7 devices such as an iPhone 16/17 or Samsung Galaxy S24/S25/S26, or an old router that’s dropping connections. If you do buy, the TP-Link Archer BE550 (around £160–£180 as of September 2026) is the sensible choice for most people — tri-band, a 6 GHz radio, and five 2.5-gigabit ports.

WiFi 7 in the UK: what actually changed
WiFi 7 (802.11be) adds three things over Wi-Fi 6 and 6E: 320 MHz channels (double the width, so more data per transmission), 4096-QAM (roughly 20% more packed into each signal), and Multi-Link Operation (MLO), which lets a device use two bands at once. MLO is where marketing runs ahead of reality. Residential trials by CableLabs, Intel and the Wireless Broadband Alliance (2026) measured roughly 50% lower latency and double the throughput under interference; vendor lab tests claim up to 85% lower average latency in congested conditions. In a quiet detached house with a few devices, the gain shrinks toward nothing. MLO helps most in a shared building with lots of neighbours and dozens of active devices.
One UK point in WiFi 7’s favour: in July 2026 Ofcom adopted a spectrum-sharing framework for the upper 6 GHz band, with a Wi-Fi-priority slice at 6425–6585 MHz. The UK becomes the first country in Europe to allow Wi-Fi across the full 5925–7125 MHz range, and Ofcom expects existing 6 GHz kit to reach part of that new spectrum by the end of 2026. A tri-band (6 GHz) WiFi 7 router bought now has more room to grow here than it did a year ago.
Do you actually need a WiFi 7 router yet?
Probably not. UK full-fibre availability reached about 85.6% of premises as of 7 September 2026 (thinkbroadband), but most full-fibre packages sold are 100–900 Mbps — speeds Wi-Fi 6 already delivers over the air with room to spare. Multi-gigabit lines are still a minority: Virgin Media Gig2 up to 2 Gbps, Vodafone up to 1.6 Gbps on Openreach or 2.2 Gbps on CityFibre, Sky up to 5 Gbps on CityFibre where available, Toob’s 2.3 Gbps from April 2026. Below roughly 1 Gbps, a WiFi 7 router does not make your internet faster. Work out how much speed you actually need first.
Then check what your ISP already gave you. On EE Full Fibre you very likely own a WiFi 7 hub already. On BT, Sky, Virgin Media or TalkTalk standard plans you have a Wi-Fi 6 hub — and for a sub-gigabit line that is usually fine. Which UK phones, laptops and consoles have WiFi 7
A WiFi 7 router does nothing extra for a Wi-Fi 6 device. Both ends have to support WiFi 7 before you get MLO, 320 MHz or 4K-QAM. Here’s what’s supported in the UK as of September 2026:

How to choose the best WiFi 7 router for your UK home
Four specs decide whether a WiFi 7 router earns its price. Get these right and the brand matters far less.
- Tri-band, not dual-band. The cheapest “WiFi 7” routers drop the 6 GHz radio, which is where most of the benefit lives. A dual-band WiFi 7 box behaves close to a good Wi-Fi 6 router. Insist on a 6 GHz radio if you want the standard’s real advantages.
- Multi-gig ports that match your line. One 1 GbE port caps a wired device at about 940 Mbps. A 2 Gbps line wired needs 2.5GbE; the fastest CityFibre tiers want 10GbE. No multi-gig line means multi-gig ports are wasted money.
- MLO you’ll actually use. MLO cuts latency most in busy radio environments — flats, terraces, lots of neighbours. In a quiet detached house the gain is small.
- Skip the “AI” upsell. Paying extra for vaguely-defined AI traffic management rarely changes anything you can measure. Spend the difference on ports or coverage.

TP-Link Archer BE550 — best overall
The Archer BE550 (BE9300 class) turns up on nearly every credible UK WiFi 7 list because it does the important things without a premium price: a real tri-band layout with a 6 GHz radio, MLO, 4096-QAM, and five 2.5-gigabit Ethernet ports (one WAN, four LAN), which is generous at this level. Best price tracked around £159.97 in September 2026, with typical retail closer to £160–£180.
The limits are predictable. There’s no 10GbE port, so a 5 Gbps CityFibre line can’t be fully used wired — though 2.5GbE covers Virgin’s Gig2 and every sub-2-Gbps line easily. Coverage is solid for a three-bed semi, but a single unit is still a single unit; a large or awkward house needs mesh. ASUS RT-BE58U — best value (dual-band)
The RT-BE58U is the router to buy when the budget is tight and you want a modern, reliable box rather than the full WiFi 7 feature set. It’s dual-band — 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz only, no 6 GHz — with a 2.5G WAN port, a 2.5G LAN port, ASUS’s free-for-life AiProtection security, and AiMesh so you can add nodes later. UK pricing sat around £89.99–£110 in September 2026 (idealo, PriceSpy).
Be clear about the trade-off. Without a 6 GHz radio you miss the widest 320 MHz channels and most of the headline gains, so this is really a very good Wi-Fi 6-class router with WiFi 7 housekeeping and MLO across 2.4/5 GHz. The Archer BE230 (BE3600 class) is the cheapest genuine WiFi 7 router on sale in the UK, tracked at roughly £57–£70 in September 2026 (PriceSpy, Argos, Senetic). It’s dual-band — 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, no 6 GHz — with two 2.5-gigabit ports. On paper it ticks the WiFi 7 box; without the 6 GHz radio and 320 MHz channels, it performs close to a mid-range Wi-Fi 6 router.
That’s not a reason to avoid it, just to be honest about what you’re buying. If your old router is a decade-old ISP box and you want something current for under £70 with a couple of fast wired ports, the BE230 does that job well — it just won’t feel different from a good Wi-Fi 6 router. TP-Link’s Mercusys sub-brand MR47BE (around £150) sits between this and the BE550 as a middle option.

The catch is the port count: one 2.5G LAN port means one high-speed wired device before you need a switch. Expert Reviews, which bench-tests routers in the UK, has been blunt that WiFi 7 isn’t yet delivering large real-world gains over cheaper Wi-Fi 6 options — so the RS300’s value is really that 10G WAN socket. With dual 10 GbE you can feed the router from a 5 Gbps line and still run a 10G link to a NAS or wired office. The trade-offs are price and size — this is a large, expensive router, and under 1 Gbps you’re paying for ports you’ll never fill. Amazon eero Max 7 — borderline (this is a mesh, not a standalone router)
The eero Max 7 is here with an asterisk. It’s a mesh system, sold in one, two or three-packs — not a standalone router — so it isn’t a like-for-like pick against the others. Each unit is tri-band with two 10 GbE and two 2.5 GbE ports, and pricing runs around £600 for a single unit, £1,150 for a two-pack and £1,700 for a three-pack (Amazon UK), with stock often thin.

How to set up a WiFi 7 router on a UK broadband line
Connecting a third-party router to a UK line is where most people get stuck, and the steps depend on your provider. Full fibre (FTTP) needs no separate modem — the fibre terminates at an Openreach or CityFibre ONT on your wall, and Ethernet runs straight from that into the router’s WAN port.
- Confirm your line type. FTTP plugs into an ONT. FTTC (part-fibre) and cable still need the ISP’s modem or hub doing the modem job.
- FTTP: run Ethernet from the ONT’s LAN port into the new router’s WAN/internet port.
- BT or EE: set the connection type to PPPoE and enter the username and password from your provider — our best router for EE Broadband guide has the exact strings and the Digital Voice catch.
- Sky full fibre: set the WAN to DHCP with Option 61, using the client ID from your Sky account. Sky hubs have no bridge mode, so ASUS and Netgear routers handle Sky via Option 61 — our best router for Sky Broadband guide walks through it.
- Virgin Media: leave the Hub 5 in place, switch it to Modem Mode in the Virgin app, reboot, then connect your WiFi 7 router’s WAN port to the Hub’s Ethernet port.
- Turn off the ISP hub’s Wi-Fi, or give the new router different network names, so devices join the new radio.
- Set a WPA3 (or WPA2/WPA3 mixed) password. Add a separate legacy network only if you own Wi-Fi 4 devices that won’t connect.
- Enable MLO on the 5 GHz and 6 GHz radios if your devices support it.
- Run a wired speed test at the router, then a wireless test next to it, to confirm both the line and the radio are performing.

Stick with your ISP hub if…
Your line is under about 1 Gbps, your Wi-Fi already reaches everywhere you use it, and your hub is Wi-Fi 6 or newer (2021 onwards). That covers most UK homes. A new router won’t make a 500 Mbps line faster or a strong signal stronger.
Buy a single WiFi 7 router if…
You have a multi-gigabit line, or WiFi 7 devices in a busy radio environment, or an old router that’s dropping connections — and your home is a size one well-placed unit can cover (a flat, a smaller house, an open-plan or single-storey layout).
