WiFi 6 vs WiFi 6E vs WiFi 7 comes down to one honest answer for most UK homes: if your Wi-Fi already works and you are not buying a new router anyway, you do not need to upgrade yet. The newer standards are real improvements, but the gains only show up when your broadband line, your devices and your router all support the same thing — and on a typical UK full-fibre plan with a provider’s own hub, that bar is already cleared.

WiFi 6 vs WiFi 6E vs WiFi 7: the short answer
WiFi 6 is enough for almost every UK home right now. WiFi 6E adds a clean extra lane (the 6 GHz band) that helps a small number of close-range devices. WiFi 7 adds a feature called MLO that steadies latency and cuts dropouts, plus much wider channels that only matter on 900 Mbps or faster broadband. None of them add Wi-Fi range, and none of them make a slow broadband line faster.

The bottom line: the standard on the box is the least important part of your Wi-Fi. Coverage, router placement and how recent your devices are all matter more.
What WiFi 6, WiFi 6E and WiFi 7 actually mean
Each standard is mostly one or two headline features bolted onto the one before it. Here is what they do, without the spec-sheet language.
- OFDMA (arrived with WiFi 6) — splits one Wi-Fi channel into smaller slots so the router can serve several devices in a single transmission instead of one at a time. Helps most when lots of devices are online together.
- 1024-QAM (WiFi 6) — a denser way of packing data into each transmission than WiFi 5 used. Only helps at close range with a strong signal.
- The 6 GHz band (WiFi 6E and WiFi 7) — a third lane on top of 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Because it is new, it is empty: no older devices, no neighbours, no microwaves. Wide, clear channels mean full speed with less interference. The trade-off: 6 GHz does not travel as far or through walls as well as 2.4/5 GHz, so the benefit is strongest in the same room or one wall away.
- MLO, or Multi-Link Operation (WiFi 7 only) — a WiFi 7 device and router use two bands at once, say 5 GHz and 6 GHz, for one connection instead of picking one. If a band gets busy or drops, traffic shifts to the other with no interruption: steadier latency and fewer dropouts on video calls and games. Needs WiFi 7 at both ends.
- 320 MHz channels (WiFi 7) — a lane twice as wide as WiFi 6E’s 160 MHz, which doubles throughput on that link. The 6 GHz band only, and only if your device supports it too.
- 4096-QAM (WiFi 7) — packs roughly 20% more data per transmission than WiFi 6’s 1024-QAM, again only at close range with a strong signal.
WiFi 7’s 46 Gbps figure comes from stacking all of these at once, and no home hits it. The useful number: WiFi 7 delivers up to roughly 2.4 times the throughput of WiFi 6 for the same radio setup (NETGEAR, TP-Link, accessed 7 September 2026) — and only when your line and devices keep up.
The UK’s 6 GHz headroom is growing
Lower 6 GHz (5925–6425 MHz) has been licence-exempt for low-power indoor Wi-Fi in the UK since 2020 — that is the spectrum every WiFi 6E and WiFi 7 router uses today. In July 2026, Ofcom confirmed it will open the upper 6 GHz sub-band (6425–6585 MHz) for Wi-Fi on the same licence-exempt basis, making the UK the first country in Europe to do this (sources: ISPreview, July 2026; Ofcom, accessed 7 September 2026).
For a buyer today it changes nothing — your current router behaves the same. Over the next few years it means more room for non-overlapping 320 MHz channels, which matters most in flats where dozens of 6 GHz networks compete for the same air.
Dual-band vs tri-band: how many bands your next router needs
Dual-band means 2.4 GHz plus 5 GHz. Tri-band adds a third radio — either a second 5 GHz radio on older kit, or a 6 GHz radio on WiFi 6E and WiFi 7 kit. In a mesh, that third radio can be set aside as backhaul: the private link the units use to talk to each other, so they are not stealing bandwidth from your devices to do it. The rule to buy by:
- Dual-band WiFi 6 if you are on 500 Mbps or less, run a handful of devices, and have no mesh.
- Tri-band with a 6 GHz radio if you are on 900 Mbps or more, running a mesh, or have roughly 30 or more connected devices.
EE shows how close these two sit. The Smart Hub 7 Plus is dual-band WiFi 7; the Smart Hub 7 Pro is tri-band WiFi 7 with a 6 GHz radio added. Same generation, different band count — and the Plus is what most EE Full Fibre customers get.

WiFi 6 vs WiFi 6E vs WiFi 7: which one do you actually need?
For most UK homes the answer is WiFi 6. Whether that changes comes down to four things: your broadband speed, your device count, whether you game or make a lot of video calls, and the size and layout of your home.
By broadband speed tier
On a typical UK full-fibre line of 67–150 Mbps, any WiFi 6 router already carries your full speed with headroom to spare. WiFi 7’s headline numbers only start to matter above 900 Mbps, or for fast file transfers between devices on your own network. Check your plan first — you can compare what each provider’s hub gives you and work out where you stand before spending anything.
By how many devices you run
Count what is actually on your Wi-Fi: phones, laptops, TVs, speakers, plugs, bulbs, cameras, a doorbell. Under about 20, WiFi 6 handles it comfortably. At 30 or more, OFDMA and a 6 GHz radio earn their place, and a tri-band mesh copes with a busy smart home better than a single router.
For gaming, VR and video calls
WiFi 7’s MLO is the one feature worth caring about here. Using two bands at once means steadier ping and fewer dropouts mid-call or mid-match — but only if both your device and router are WiFi 7. By home size and layout
No Wi-Fi standard adds range, and 6 GHz actually reaches less far than 2.4/5 GHz. For a three-storey house, a long thin flat or thick Victorian walls, a mesh matters far more than the generation on the box — a WiFi 6 mesh beats a single WiFi 7 router for coverage every time. Your devices matter too: what actually supports WiFi 6E and WiFi 7
The router standard only pays off on devices that also have it — a WiFi 7 router does nothing extra for a base PS5, an Xbox and a three-year-old laptop. Here is where common UK devices sit as of September 2026 (sources: Apple Support doc 102285; BGR “Which Devices Are Compatible With Wi-Fi 7”; PlayStation Universe; accessed 7 September 2026).
Have WiFi 7 — they get MLO and 320 MHz channels:
- Phones: iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 series (not the 16e or 17e); Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and the S25 and S26 lines (not the FE models); Google Pixel 9 and Pixel 10 Pro or XL; recent flagship OnePlus and Xiaomi.
- Laptops: anything with Intel Core Ultra (Series 1 and 2), AMD Ryzen AI or Ryzen 9000, or Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite or X Plus — most 2025–2026 Windows flagships.
- Consoles and handhelds: the PlayStation 5 Pro (confirmed WiFi 7) and the MSI Claw 8 AI+.
Have WiFi 6E only — they use the 6 GHz band, but no MLO and no 320 MHz:
- Apple Silicon Macs from the M3 generation (late 2023) onward. As of early 2026 no Mac ships WiFi 7 — a WiFi 6E Mac on a WiFi 7 router simply connects at 6E speeds.
- iPad Pro (M4); Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra to S23; Steam Deck OLED.
WiFi 6 or older — no 6 GHz at all:
- The base PlayStation 5 and PS5 Slim are WiFi 6. Only the PS5 Pro has WiFi 7.
- Xbox Series X and Series S are still WiFi 5 (802.11ac).
- Most smart TVs, streaming sticks, smart-home gadgets, robot vacuums, printers, and any phone or laptop more than about three years old — WiFi 5 or WiFi 6, and they will stay that way for years.
If you are worried about upgrading, do not be: every WiFi 6E and WiFi 7 router is fully backwards compatible. Older kit connects exactly as before on 2.4/5 GHz — it just does not get the new-band extras. Upgrading the router never breaks anything.
What your UK broadband provider’s router already gives you
On EE Full Fibre you already have WiFi 7. On BT, Virgin Media, standard Sky and TalkTalk you have WiFi 6 — which is plenty for a typical 67–150 Mbps plan. The Smart Hub 7 Plus is dual-band WiFi 7 with 2.5 Gbps WAN and LAN ports and roughly 907 Mbps of real-world Wi-Fi. Premium and Ultimate tiers, including the 1.6 Gbps plan, get the tri-band Smart Hub 7 Pro with a 6 GHz radio.
BT ships the Smart Hub 3, launched May 2026: WiFi 6, dual-band 4×4, with four gigabit LAN ports. BT deliberately stopped short of WiFi 7, unlike sister brand EE. Some older BT lines still come with the Smart Hub 2.
Virgin Media supplies the Hub 5: WiFi 6, dual-band, one 2.5 GbE LAN port and three gigabit ports, around 140 m² of quoted coverage (a Hub 5x exists for multi-gig Nexfibre lines). More in our Virgin Media Hub 5 notes.
TalkTalk is the only major UK ISP that bundles a third-party mesh as standard — the Amazon eero 6 (WiFi 6) on Full Fibre 150, with the Wi-Fi Hub 3 on the cheaper Fibre 35/65 tiers and eero Pro 6 on Full Fibre 500/900. Our review covers TalkTalk’s bundled eero router in full.
Sky gives standard customers a WiFi 6 hub; the WiFi 7 hub (Hub Max or Gigafast+) is CityFibre multi-gigabit only. Vodafone works the same way — the WiFi 7 Ultra Hub 7 is Pro III only, with a WiFi 6 Power Hub on standard plans.
The takeaway: do not buy a WiFi 7 router to “keep up” if your bundled hub already covers your line speed and device count. On EE you are already there; on BT, Virgin, standard Sky and TalkTalk, a WiFi 6 hub is the right match for a normal UK full-fibre plan.

Amazon eero 6 (single) or TP-Link Archer AX55. The cheapest way onto WiFi 6 for a flat or small house on 500 Mbps or less. The eero 6 runs around ~£70–110 at Amazon UK; the Archer AX55 around ~£75–90 (as of September 2026 — check current prices via the links).
Best WiFi 6E picks
Amazon eero Pro 6E (single). Worth it mainly for the built-in Zigbee smart-home hub, which can save you buying a separate bridge. The 6 GHz band is a bonus, not the reason. Around ~£300–350 at Amazon UK (as of September 2026 — check the current price via the link).
TP-Link Archer AXE75 or ASUS RT-AXE7800. A hard sell in 2026: WiFi 7 kit costs about the same and does more, so only buy 6E if it is discounted clearly below WiFi 7. The AXE75 runs around ~£120 and the RT-AXE7800 around ~£180–190 (as of September 2026 — check current prices via the links).
Best WiFi 7 picks
Amazon eero 7 (3-pack). The best-value route to WiFi 7 and MLO across a whole home. Note it is dual-band — no 6 GHz radio — so it is about steadier connections, not headline 6 GHz speed. Around ~£290 street, ~£350 RRP at Amazon UK (as of September 2026 — check via the link).
TP-Link Archer BE550 or ASUS RT-BE88U. The sensible single-router WiFi 7 pick if you are on 900 Mbps+ and own WiFi 7 devices. The tri-band BE550 starts around ~£160 at PriceSpy UK; the RT-BE88U runs around ~£230–300 (as of September 2026 — check current prices via the links).
The Amazon eero Pro 7 (3-pack), around ~£700–750 at PriceSpy UK (as of September 2026), is overkill for most homes — only worth it for multi-gig broadband in a large house.

Is WiFi 7 worth it in 2026?
WiFi 7 is worth it only if you are buying a router anyway, you are on 900 Mbps or faster broadband, and you own at least one WiFi 7 device such as a recent flagship phone or a 2025-or-newer laptop. For most UK homes on 67–150 Mbps with a working WiFi 6 hub, it makes no practical difference.
Do I need WiFi 6E, or should I wait for WiFi 7?
WiFi 6E is rarely worth buying on its own now. WiFi 7 kit costs about the same and includes everything 6E does plus MLO. Pick 6E only if it is discounted well below WiFi 7, or you specifically want a model like the eero Pro 6E for its built-in Zigbee smart-home hub.
Will WiFi 7 work with my older devices?
WiFi 7 routers are fully backwards compatible. Older phones, laptops, consoles and smart-home kit connect exactly as before on the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands — they just do not get the WiFi 7 extras like MLO and 320 MHz channels. Upgrading the router does not break anything.
Does WiFi 7 improve range? Does 6 GHz reach upstairs?
WiFi 7 itself does not add range. The 6 GHz band it uses actually travels less far and through fewer walls than 2.4/5 GHz, so upstairs you may drop back to 5 GHz. For coverage problems, a mesh system matters far more than which standard you own.
Can my broadband speed actually use WiFi 7?
On a typical UK full-fibre plan of 67–150 Mbps, any WiFi 6 router already carries your full line speed with room to spare. WiFi 7’s headline speeds only matter on 900 Mbps or faster lines, or for fast transfers between devices on your own home network.
Is WiFi 6E dead now that WiFi 7 exists?
WiFi 6E is not dead, but it is mostly skipped. Most 2025–2026 devices went straight from WiFi 6 to WiFi 7. Existing 6E hardware still works fine — it is just rarely the best-value new buy when WiFi 7 costs about the same.
My phone doesn’t support WiFi 7 — should I still buy a WiFi 7 router?
A WiFi 7 router is only worth it in that case if you are replacing the router anyway and want it to last several years. You will not see WiFi 7 speeds until you have WiFi 7 devices, so a good WiFi 6 router or mesh is the better spend today.
What’s the difference between dual-band and tri-band?
Dual-band routers use 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Tri-band routers add a third radio — either a second 5 GHz radio or, on WiFi 6E and WiFi 7 kit, a 6 GHz radio. In a mesh, that third radio can be dedicated to backhaul so the units talk to each other without slowing your devices. Dual-band WiFi 6 is fine up to about 500 Mbps; go tri-band for 900 Mbps+, a mesh, or 30-plus devices.
