To cancel a Virgin Media contract, call 150 from a Virgin phone (or 0345 454 1111 from any other phone) or use live chat, and give 30 days’ notice. If you are still inside your minimum term, Virgin charges an early disconnection fee. It is a percentage of your monthly bill for each month left, after a paid notice month, not every remaining payment in full. For broadband only, Virgin’s own guide puts that percentage at 93–96% of your monthly charge on standard pricing (Virgin Media, checked 23 October 2026). You can leave without a fee once your minimum term ends, inside the 14-day cooling-off period, if a network speed fault is not fixed within 30 days, or if you move somewhere Virgin cannot serve. The April price rises do not give you a fee-free exit. If you are switching to another broadband or landline provider, you contact only the new provider and give Virgin no notice at all.

How do you cancel your Virgin Media contract?
You cancel Virgin Media by phone or live chat, and the standard notice is 30 days. Virgin points customers to chat or phone rather than a cancellation form, so “cancel online” means using live chat. Call 150 from a Virgin Media phone or 0345 454 1111 from any other phone (both from Virgin’s leaving page, checked 23 October 2026).
Check your end date before you ring. Sign in to My Virgin Media and open View contract. Virgin’s standard minimum term is normally 24 months, though fixed terms of 6, 9, 12 and 18 months also exist. After the minimum term the contract rolls monthly, and you can leave with 30 days’ notice and no early disconnection fee. Rolling 30-day contracts are the exception: Virgin charges a £45 flexi-fee when you join one.
Step by step: cancelling Virgin Media broadband
- Find your minimum term end date in My Virgin Media under View contract.
- If you are cancelling outright, chat to Virgin online or call 150 / 0345 454 1111 and give 30 days’ notice.
- Ask for the exact early disconnection fee in writing (a chat transcript or email) before you agree, and ask what the final bill will include.
- Return your router and TV box using the free prepaid pack or doorstep collection, and keep the proof.
- Move anything tied to your Virgin Media email address, because access ends 90 days after disconnection.
Kit return is free, via a prepaid pack dropped at a Yodel or InPost store or a doorstep collection. If you do not send it back, Virgin charges “reasonable recovery costs and a replacement fee”. It publishes no per-device amounts, so do not rely on a figure from a forum. If your services ended less than 80 days ago, returning the kit gets the equipment charge credited back (Virgin Media, checked 23 October 2026). Bereavement and critical illness cases have their own routes, linked from Virgin’s leaving page.
Switching provider? You don’t need to call Virgin Media
If you are moving your broadband or landline to another provider, you contact only the new provider, and the One Touch Switch process cancels the old service for you. Virgin’s own contract page confirms it: you do not need to give notice when switching to another provider (Virgin Media, checked 23 October 2026). One Touch Switch has been live since 12 September 2024, works across networks (Virgin to Openreach, for example), and more than 3.4 million people had started a switch by 3 September 2026 (Ofcom, citing TOTSCO data).
Under Ofcom’s rules the old provider must not charge for any notice period after the switchover date, and loss of service should not exceed one working day. If you are still in contract, your new provider must tell you about any charges before the switch goes ahead (Ofcom, updated 25 August 2026). Our guide on how to switch broadband covers the process.
There are two catches. First, TV is different: Virgin says some providers cancel a TV service when you switch broadband and others need you to cancel it separately, so check with Virgin if you have a bundle. Second, mobile is a separate contract. Virgin’s early disconnection page refers O2 customers to O2’s own terms, so a Virgin broadband switch does not touch a mobile plan. Virgin does not spell out how it applies the early disconnection fee when you switch mid-contract without giving notice, so expect it on your final bill and ask your new provider to confirm the amount first.
Why was cancelling Virgin Media so hard? The Ofcom £28m fine
Ofcom fined Virgin Media £28m on 8 July 2026, its largest fine under consumer protection rules, for making it difficult to cancel across “millions of calls” between 1 January 2022 and 11 September 2024. Ofcom found a two-tier retention set-up where only second-tier agents could process cancellations, dropped calls, excessive transfers and holds, and commission that rewarded those outcomes. The fine was cut by 30% because Virgin settled. Virgin has to check that affected complainants received compensation within six months (Ofcom, 8 July 2026).
Ofcom’s findings cover 2022 to September 2024, and we have seen no evidence of the same behaviour after that date. Virgin says it has changed its commission, training and quality checks. If you are switching broadband or landline provider, One Touch Switch means you never have to speak to a retention team. If you do ring Virgin, note the date, time and agent name, and keep any chat transcript.
What does it cost to cancel a Virgin Media contract early?
Leaving a Virgin Media contract early costs your 30-day notice month at the normal price, plus an early disconnection fee covering the months that remain. That fee is a percentage of your current monthly charge, not the full remaining payments, and depends on your services, your price and the months left. All fees apply after the standard 30-day notice period, and VAT has been charged on early disconnection fees since 1 April 2022 (Virgin Media, checked 23 October 2026).
| Your package | Standard pricing | Offer pricing |
|---|---|---|
| Broadband only | 93–96% | 90–95% |
| Broadband + home phone | 94–96% | 93–95% |
| Broadband + TV | 85–89% | Not listed |
| Triple play | 85–95% | 78–92% |
| Home phone only | 97–99% | Not listed |
Here is our own estimate using Virgin’s method, not a figure from Virgin. Say you pay £29.99 a month for broadband only on standard pricing, with 10 months left. You pay the notice month at £29.99, then 9 months at 93–96% of £29.99, which is £27.89–£28.79 a month. The total comes to about £281–£289. Simply paying out all 10 months would cost £299.90.
So leaving early saves roughly £11–£19 on a broadband-only deal, and you lose the service. Virgin confirms the exact figure when you ask. Ofcom’s rule is that early termination charges should not be more than the payments left on your contract (Ofcom, updated 26 June 2026).

When can you cancel Virgin Media without an exit fee?
You can cancel Virgin Media without an early disconnection fee in four situations: after your minimum term ends, within the 14-day cooling-off period, when a network speed problem is not fixed within 30 days, and when you move to an address Virgin cannot serve.
- End of minimum term. Once it ends, the contract rolls monthly. Give 30 days’ notice and pay no fee, or switch provider and tell Virgin nothing.
- Cooling-off. If you signed up online, by phone, by email or on the doorstep, you have 14 days under the Consumer Contracts Regulations. It runs from the latest of the day after your kit arrives, the service start date or receiving the terms. You may pay for service you used. Adding a new TV package mid-term starts a fresh window for that item only (Virgin Media, checked 23 October 2026).
- Unresolved speed fault. Virgin is a signatory to Ofcom’s broadband speeds code. If your speed falls below your minimum guaranteed speed, the cause is on Virgin’s network, and it is not fixed within 30 days, you can leave penalty-free. It does not apply to rolling contracts, where you can simply give notice (Ofcom, checked 23 October 2026).
- Moving outside the network. If Virgin is available at your new address you keep the contract. If not, you may be charged the fee, but it can be credited back if you give valid evidence of your new UK address.
For the speed fault route, log every speed test. If Virgin does not resolve a complaint, you can take it to an Ofcom-approved dispute resolution scheme such as CISAS or the Communications Ombudsman. Our guide to how much speed you actually need helps you judge the fault.
Can you cancel Virgin Media because of the April price rise?
No. The April price rises do not give you a penalty-free exit, because Virgin says the annual adjustment is stated in your terms and conditions. Its page puts it this way: you “won’t be given a right to cancel… without incurring an early disconnection fee” (Virgin Media annual price change page, checked 23 October 2026). That applies whichever join-date band you are in.
| When you joined or renewed | April rise | Free exit? |
|---|---|---|
| After 2 October 2025 | Fixed £4/mo | No |
| 9 January to 2 October 2025 | Fixed £3.50/mo | No |
| Before 9 January 2025 | RPI + 3.9% (7.7% in April 2026) | No |
There are exceptions for Essential broadband, Essential broadband plus, Talk Protected and Flex, where Virgin gives 30 days’ notice and a right to cancel if it raises prices.
Ofcom’s general rule is different from what many people assume. A provider must give at least a month’s notice and a penalty-free exit only if it raises the price beyond what you agreed at sign-up. A rise written into your contract in pounds and pence, which Virgin’s £4 and £3.50 rises are, gives no exit right. Ofcom has also banned inflation and percentage-based rises for contracts from 17 January 2025 (Ofcom, updated 26 June 2026).
Should you negotiate with Virgin Media before you cancel?
Try negotiating first if you would stay for the right price, because some customers report better offers from Virgin’s cancellation team. In MoneySavingExpert’s January 2026 reader poll, 85% of Virgin customers who tried haggling said they got a better deal. That is a self-selected poll, so it shows haggling can work, not that it will for you. Discount sizes vary, nothing is guaranteed, and some customers report getting no offer at all.
Virgin’s own small print says “discounted pricing may be offered in selected locations”, so two neighbours can be offered different renewal prices. MSE readers also report that an automatic discount offered while you wait on hold is often worse than what a person will agree, so ask to speak to someone.
What Ofcom says Virgin must tell you
Ofcom requires providers to send an end-of-contract notification 10 to 40 days before your minimum term ends. It must state your end date, your notice period, your current price against the price after the contract, the provider’s best deals including new-customer prices, and when any bundle ends. Out-of-contract customers get an annual reminder (Ofcom, updated 17 July 2026). Virgin says it sends its notice 10 to 14 days before the end, and you can view it under My Virgin Media. The best deals listed in that notice are useful: quote them back when you call.
Doing nothing costs money. Ofcom found out-of-contract customers paid on average £7 a month more for standalone broadband and £9 more for triple play than in-contract customers (Ofcom pricing report, February 2026, Q2 2025 data). On Virgin’s pricing page, M125 is £23.99 a month for new customers, then £36.79 (Virgin Media, checked 23 October 2026).
How to negotiate with Virgin Media, step by step
- Know your dates. Check View contract in My Virgin Media. MSE’s advice is that timing is important: negotiate in your last month or two, or once you are out of contract.
- Benchmark first. Get two real quotes from other providers (the table further down is a start, as is the cheapest broadband deals list) plus Virgin’s own new-customer price for your speed.
- Check your renewal offers. Sign in to My Virgin Media and look at the renewal offers before you call.
- Call or chat and give a target. Say you are thinking of leaving, name the price you want, and do not take the first offer. Ask about a speed upgrade as an alternative to a price cut. See also how to haggle for a better broadband deal.
- Get it in writing. Confirm the new monthly price, the length (a new 24-month term starts a new early disconnection clock), and the April rise (a fixed £4 on a new contract). Taking a new deal remotely restarts your 14-day cooling-off for it.
- If it drags, switch. If you are bounced between agents or left on hold, hang up and switch via One Touch Switch. You never needed Virgin’s permission, and you should note the call times in case you complain.
Leave Virgin Media now or wait? A decision guide
Wait if you are early in your contract, negotiate if your end date is close, and switch if you are already out of contract or Virgin cannot match a rival price. The reason is arithmetic. A broadband-only exit fee is 93–96% of what is left, so paying to leave early rarely saves money unless one of the free exit routes applies.
Wait if you have more than two or three months left
Diarise your end date and do not pay to leave just to save a few pounds. Leave early only if you have a free-exit right, or if the monthly saving at a new provider multiplied by the months left clearly beats the gap between the fee and paying it out. In our £29.99 example that gap was only £11–£19.
Negotiate if you are in the last one or two months
Once you have your end-of-contract notice, negotiate using your quotes. If Virgin matches the cheapest option for the same speed, staying avoids an installation. If not, switch.
Switch if you are already out of contract
You are probably on the higher standard price, such as £36.79 a month on M125. Either re-contract with Virgin or switch now. There is no fee and no notice to give Virgin when switching broadband or landline.
Check first if you have Virgin TV or need top speeds
With a TV bundle, One Touch Switch may not cancel the TV part, so ask Virgin before you switch and compare the triple-play fee (85–95% on standard pricing) separately. If you are on Gig1 or Gig2 for speed, compare like for like: only Virgin’s network or full fibre will match those speeds, not the cheapest headline deal. Our Virgin Media broadband review covers each package.
What are the cheapest ways out of Virgin Media right now?
The cheapest new-customer deal we found on 20 October 2026 is TalkTalk at ~£25/mo on a 24-month term for any of its 65, 150, 500 or 900Mbps tiers. BT, EE and a Virgin re-contract follow, each with its own catch (activation fees, later price rises).
| Provider | Rating | From | Deal |
|---|---|---|---|
| BT Full Fibre 300 | 8.4/10 | ~£30.99/mo | View Deal |
| TalkTalk | 8.1/10 | ~£25/mo | View Deal |
| EE Full Fibre 100 | 7.8/10 | ~£26.99/mo | View Deal |
| Virgin Media M125 | 7.5/10 | ~£23.99/mo | View Deal |

BT: £0 activation on Full Fibre 300
BT Full Fibre 300 costs ~£30.99/mo with £0 activation, rising to £34.99 in March 2027 (BT, checked 20 October 2026). BT also has Fibre Essential on the older copper-based network at ~£28.99/mo. It costs more per month than TalkTalk’s flat £25, but you avoid any setup fee. Read our BT broadband review for the full picture.
TalkTalk: the lowest flat price, now owned by BT
TalkTalk is ~£25/mo for 65, 150, 500 or 900Mbps with no setup fee, rising to £29 in April 2027 and £33 in April 2028 (TalkTalk, checked 20 October 2026). BT Group bought TalkTalk out of administration on 5 October 2026 (reported by BT and Reuters). We would not speculate about what changes, so check the current terms before you sign. Our TalkTalk broadband review and the TalkTalk vs Virgin Media comparison cover it in more depth.
EE: cheap monthly price, £30 to get connected
EE Full Fibre 100 is ~£26.99/mo plus a £30 activation fee, going up to £30.99 in March 2027 (EE, checked 20 October 2026). It suits you if 100Mbps is plenty.
Virgin Media: stay or re-contract
Virgin’s M125 is £23.99 a month for new customers, then £36.79 (Virgin Media, checked 23 October 2026). New-customer prices are not always what an existing customer is offered, so check your renewal offers in My Virgin Media. Staying makes sense if Virgin matches the cheapest rival for your speed.
Compare every deal at your address
Deals vary by postcode. Broadband Genie listed BT Full Fibre 500 at £27.99/mo plus a £140 BT Reward Card as an online exclusive, rising to £31.99 in March 2027 (Broadband Genie, seen 23 October 2026). Vodafone and Sky also advertise switching credits towards exit fees, up to £300 and up to £200 respectively in our 20 October 2026 price check, so read the conditions before relying on either. Virgin Media cancellation FAQs
How much notice do I need to give Virgin Media?
Virgin Media needs 30 days’ notice if you cancel by phone or chat. If you are switching to another broadband or landline provider through One Touch Switch, you give Virgin no notice, because you only contact the new provider (Virgin Media, checked 23 October 2026).
How much is the Virgin Media early termination fee?
The Virgin Media early termination fee, which Virgin calls an early disconnection fee, is a percentage of your monthly charge for each month left, charged after a paid 30-day notice month. For broadband only it is 93–96% on standard pricing and 90–95% on offer pricing. On our estimate, £29.99 a month with 10 months left is about £281–£289. Virgin confirms the exact figure.
Can I leave Virgin Media early for free?
You can leave Virgin Media early for free during the 14-day cooling-off period, if a network speed fault is not fixed within 30 days under Ofcom’s speeds code, or if you move somewhere Virgin cannot serve and can prove your new address so the fee is credited back. After your minimum term ends you can leave on 30 days’ notice with no fee.
Can I cancel Virgin Media because of the April price rise?
A Virgin Media April price rise written into your contract does not let you cancel without paying the early disconnection fee. That covers the fixed £4 and £3.50 rises and the RPI-linked rise for older contracts. Ofcom’s penalty-free exit applies only when a provider raises prices beyond what you agreed at sign-up.
Do I have to return my Virgin Media hub and TV box?
Virgin Media equipment must be returned, and it is free to do so with a prepaid pack or doorstep collection. If you keep it, Virgin charges reasonable recovery costs and a replacement fee. If your services ended less than 80 days ago, returning the kit gets the equipment charge credited back.
Will Virgin Media give me a better deal if I say I’m leaving?
Some Virgin Media customers report better offers when they say they are leaving, but it is not guaranteed. In MoneySavingExpert’s January 2026 reader poll, 85% of Virgin customers who tried haggling said they got a better deal. It is a self-selected poll, discounts vary, and some customers get nothing.
What happens to my Virgin Media email when I cancel?
Your Virgin Media email address stops working 90 days after your services are disconnected (Virgin Media, checked 23 October 2026). Move your contacts and accounts to a new address before then.
